  7.        Unhealthy  plants  are  very  susceptible  to  pest attack and
  8.        disease. Regular fertilising helps to maintain healthy  plants
  9.        which have a natural resistance to pests and diseases.

  11.        There are two  types  of  fertiliser:  Organic  and  Inorganic
  12.        ORGANIC fertilisers are animal and vegetable based.They assist
  13.        in  conditioning  the  soil, Improve  drainage  and  aeration.

  15.        INORGANIC fertilisers are chemically based  and  can be bought
  16.        for specific plants, Azaleas, Camelias, Roses  or  for general
  17.        purpose use. They also come in various forms,  Liquid,  Powder
  18.        or Granulated.

  20.        A well maintained garden that makes use of compost, consisting
  21.        of vegetable wastes and nitrogen rich animal  manures,  should
  22.        not need the addition of chemical fertilisers.

  24.        DON'T fertilise if you are in doubt. More plants are  killed by
  25.        the use of too many fertilisers, than are  saved  by  a  quick
  26.        feed of inorganic mixes.

  28.        DO fertilise sparingly  and in general, only once per year and
  29.        preferably in spring.

  31.        DON'T feed sick or ailing plants.  Unlike  Humans,  plants when
  32.        sick should never be fed,unless they are lacking in a specific
  33.        mineral deficiency.

  35.        DO  use  animal  manures, including  cow  and poultry manures,
  36.        providing  they  are  not  fresh.  Old manures do not  have  an
  37.        unpleasant odour.

  39.        DON'T overfeed, especially with chemical fertilisers. Read  the
  40.        directions carefully and apply sparingly.

  42.        DO feed when active growth is evident.

  44.        DON'T feed plants when they are in a dormant state.

  46.        DO place fertilisers in a radius under the outer foliage line.

  48.        DON'T place fertilisers close to the trunk of the plant.

  50.        DO water well after feeding.

  52.        DON'T fertilise in late autumn, as the new growth generated from
  53.        fertilising will not have hardened before winter sets in.

  55.        DO use liquid fertilisers, for a quick feed, as  they  are high 
  56.        in nitrogen and less concentrated than other fertilisers.

  58.        DON'T overfeed your plants. Ive said it again, as it  can  never
  59.        be over emphasised.

  61.        DO use slow release granulated fertilisers as a safe alternative
  62.        to organic fertilisers.
